Remanufactured Parts or New: When Each One Makes Sense

The short answer

For a major component on a machine you plan to keep running, such as an engine, a pump, or a transmission, go remanufactured. A remanufactured part is rebuilt and tested to the manufacturer’s specifications, it costs a lot less than new, and in most cases it carries the same warranty. Wear parts are always new, because nobody rebuilds a filter or a bucket tooth.

What remanufactured means

Remanufactured and used are not the same thing. A used part comes off one machine and goes onto another as it is. A remanufactured part is completely taken apart, and every piece is cleaned and inspected. Worn pieces are replaced with new ones, and the finished component is tested to make sure it meets the specifications it was built to. It arrives ready to install, so the repair turns around fast.

When remanufactured is the better buy

The parts that get remanufactured are the expensive ones: complete engines, short blocks, cylinder heads, turbochargers, water and oil pumps, fuel injection pumps and nozzles, alternators and starters, hydraulic components, torque converters and transmissions, air conditioning compressors, and electronic controllers and monitors. That’s where the saving is biggest, often 25 to 45 percent under new. On a machine with years of work left in it, a remanufactured engine puts it back to work for a lot less than a new one.

When new is the only buy

Wear parts are replaced, not rebuilt: filters, bucket teeth, cutting edges, hoses, seals, and belts. New is also the answer when no remanufactured version exists for your part, and the counter can tell you that in one call.

The core

Remanufactured parts are built from the used ones that come back, so the old part you take off is the next one to be rebuilt. Keep it complete, with its serial plate on and the oil drained, and ask the counter how the core is handled on your part before you order.

Ask before the repair starts

Give us the model, the serial number, and the component that failed. We’ll tell you whether a remanufactured one is available, what warranty comes with it, and how soon it can go in. Our guide to ordering parts covers what else to have ready.
