New, Used, or Rental Purchase: How to Decide

If the machine is going to run most of the year, buy it new and get the full warranty. Buy used for a second machine, or when the budget is tight: it’s been through our shop, and you pay less for the same work. If you’re not sure it’s the right machine, rent it first. Every rental has a rent-to-purchase option, so you can buy the one you’ve been running.
New
Order new and you pick the bucket, the coupler, tracks or tires, and the cab options, and the brand’s telematics comes with it. It’s under warranty from day one: on a new Link-Belt excavator, 5 years or 5,000 hours on the whole machine. The other brands carry their own, and we’ll go over the one on your machine. A machine in stock goes to work now. One we order takes longer, so get the lead time with the quote. Hitachi’s machines take the Landcros name in April 2027, and our guide to Hitachi/Landcros wheel loaders covers the change.
Used
Our technicians inspect every used machine, write down its condition, and price it on what they find. The inventory changes month to month: excavators, mini excavators, skid steers, compact track loaders, wheel loaders, smooth drum compactors, and attachments, from the four brands we sell new and some others. Ask what warranty is left, and walk the machine yourself before you sign. Our used equipment inspection checklist says what to look at and what to ask for.
Rent first, then buy
Rent the machine and put it on your jobs. You find out how it runs, what it burns, and how it fits the work, which no walk around a parked machine can tell you. If it’s the right one, buy it. If it isn’t, send it back and rent a different size. Reach out to our sales department to learn more about the rent-to-purchase option. We have a guide on renting, leasing, or buying that says when owning pays, and one on how renting works that has the terms.
Financing
Financing for a new or used machine goes through one of four programs on our Finance page: ZAXIS Finance for Hitachi/Landcros machines, Link-Belt Excavator Financial Services, Takeuchi Financial Services, and Falcon Leasing. Each has its own application there, and our credit manager will walk you through it.
What to tell us
Tell us the job the machine will do most, how much of the year it will run, and when you need it. With that, we can say whether the right machine is in stock, in the rental fleet, or one we order for you.
