The short answer

When you’re choosing between a New Holland skid steer and track loader, the first thing to figure out is what the machine will be driving on. A skid steer turns by skidding its tires, which can tear up a lawn or fresh topsoil, so it belongs on pavement and packed gravel. A track loader spreads its weight over two long tracks, so it stays on top of soft ground and keeps its grip on a slope, and it works on hard surfaces too. Once you know which kind you need, pick the size by the heaviest load you’ll be lifting. Our New Holland rentals are three skid steers, the L320, L328, and L334, and three track loader lines, listed in our rate guide as the C327/C330, C332/C337, and C345. We also sell New Holland skid steers, track loaders, compact wheel loaders, and tractor loader backhoes new.

Skid steer or track loader

For grading, the track loader has the edge. On its long, flat tracks, the machine rocks forward and back less as it travels, so the bucket holds a steadier line. If nearly all of your work is on pavement, concrete, and packed gravel, either machine does it, and the L320 skid steer is the easier one to tow yourself. At 6,470 pounds, it weighs less than any track loader we rent. Our guide to choosing a skid steer or a track loader explains which one fits your work.

The skid steers: L320, L328, L334

All three are vertical lift machines. New Holland calls its vertical lift linkage Super Boom, and on the L334 it reaches out at full height to place a load in the center of a high-sided truck box or hopper. Pick among the three by the heaviest load you’ll be lifting, and check the bucket width against the narrowest opening on the way in.

L320Vertical2,00072″6′ 7″6,470
L328Vertical2,80072″ or 78″6′ 7″8,245
L334Vertical3,40078″ or 84″6′ 9″9,100

These capacities are New Holland’s. The widths are bucket widths, and the L328 and the L334 are each listed with two.

The track loaders: C327/C330, C332/C337, C345

Two lines in our rate guide each cover two models, the C327 or C330 and the C332 or C337, and the capacity listed is the lower model’s. The C327 is radial lift, and the other four are vertical lift. Size for size, a radial machine digs harder and suits grading and flatbed trucks, while a vertical machine generally reaches farther out at full height, which helps with trucks and hoppers that have high sides. So if the lift type or the capacity matters for your job, ask which machine you’ll be getting.

C332/C337Vertical2,24078″6′ 9″9,630
C345Vertical3,15078″6′ 9″10,610

These capacities look low next to the skid steers’ numbers because they’re figured more conservatively.

Why the C345 shows two different numbers

If you look up the C345 on New Holland’s site, you’ll see 4,500 pounds. Our rate guide lists 3,150. Both are right, because New Holland publishes its track loader capacities two ways. The 4,500 is half the weight in the bucket that would tip the machine forward, and the 3,150 is 35 percent of that same weight, the more conservative figure. We list the conservative one for every track loader we rent, New Holland and Takeuchi alike, and the skid steers at the 50 percent figure, the way New Holland lists them.

To compare a track loader with a skid steer, divide the track loader’s capacity by 0.7, which puts it close to its 50 percent figure. The C345’s 3,150 becomes 4,500, which is more than the L334’s 3,400. Use the divided number only to compare the two kinds. To match a machine to your heaviest load, go by the capacity we list, and on the job, go by the rated operating capacity in the operator’s manual for the machine you have.

What we sell new

We sell four New Holland lines new. If you’re buying, the lineup goes smaller than anything we rent on the skid steer side and a lot bigger on the track loader side. New Holland’s skid steers weigh 5,370 to 9,100 pounds, with capacities from 1,600 to 3,400. Its track loaders run from 8,270 to 16,100 pounds and, by New Holland’s 50 percent figures, lift 2,700 to 6,200.

The other two lines are compact wheel loaders, from 10,913 to 13,668 pounds, and tractor loader backhoes, from 17,487 to 18,805 pounds. A tractor loader backhoe has a loader on the front and a backhoe on the back, and the operator turns the seat to switch between them. Our guide to choosing a compact wheel loader or a track loader covers when to pick one over the other.

Parts, service, and FleetForce

We’re an authorized New Holland parts dealer, and New Holland Construction has certified us as a Service Excellence Dealer. Our technicians work on New Holland machines in our shops and on job sites. FleetForce, New Holland’s telematics, shows where your machines are, sends maintenance and service alerts, and reports fuel use and hours. For financing on a new machine, our Finance page lists the programs we work with.

What to tell us

Tell us what the machine will be driving on, the heaviest load you’ll be lifting, and the narrowest opening on the way in. If you’ll be loading trucks or hoppers with high sides, say so, since that points to vertical lift. With that, we can tell you which New Holland machine to start with. Every rental machine has a rent-to-purchase option, so you can run the one you’re leaning toward on your own work before you buy. Rentals don’t include an operator. Our guide to how renting works covers hours, fuel, insurance, and returns.
